Is Your Home Really Secure?
Home owners often think about the physical security of their homes – making sure smart cameras, lighting, and detectors can deter malicious intent. But how about the threats to your home’s cyber security?
For any homeowner with connected smart technology, there are some serious threats to consider
A recent report from security research company Forescout finds that the very devices meant to keep the home physically safe, like IP cameras, could be the very things that lead to major risks and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Essential IT devices we all depend on, like routers, can also leave homes vulnerable. Other network devices can have dangerous open ports, leaving them exposed online. Servers, computers, and hypervisors are also high risk entry points, especially with unpatched systems and applications.
IoT devices with vulnerabilities have expanded by 136% since 2023, according to the report.
The report notes that Al devices made up 58% of the vulnerabilities last year.
Cybercriminal botnets and hacking groups can exploit network-connected devices such as Network Video Recorders and IP cameras. In a worst-case scenario, an entire building automation system can be infiltrated and taken over.
Here’s the good news: This is exactly the kind of threat to our clients that we prioritize and manage above all else.
These vulnerabilities in a home are why a smart home integrator is vital to any home with connected technology. A bunch of separate systems all working separately and communicating across unprotected channels – whether in the home or beyond – is a serious liability that puts the home and its residents at serious risk.
We know this; we stay on top of it so our clients can rest easy.
As integrators, we use network segmentation and other security hardening tools to protect our clients’ home networks. Every connected IoT device is protected and secure. The home automation platforms we install, like Savant and josh.ai, are top-shelf, secure networks that safeguard a clients’ security and privacy. In fact, one of the reasons we favor these companies is because they excel at protecting our clients’ homes.
We know that smart home technology can be confusing and overwhelming. Fast-evolving threats to a home’s security are hard to stay on top of. We take the responsibility to make sure the systems we install and manage are secure and private, whether it’s a home office printer or a top-of-the-line home cinema. And we continue the ongoing maintenance and surveillance to ensure that the integrity and privacy of our client’s system stays ahead of security threats.
