How to Protect Your Home’s Cybersecurity
One of our top priorities is our clients’ home cybersecurity.
There’s good reason: Smart home owners know that, with the increase of connected smart technology and the Internet of Things, insecure systems can leave them vulnerable to easy attacks from hackers looking to steal vital information or just mess with their homes (we’ve all heard the stories).
A recent report highlighted just how concerning a home’s cybersecurity has become.
Research reports that 54% of U.S. internet households reported a data privacy or security issue over the last 12 months. While this is definitely alarming, it’s even worse when you consider it’s an increase of 50% since 2018. Naturally, more home owners are growing concerned about their connected devices. The report finds that 62% of smart home device owners expressed apprehension about unauthorized access and control of their home’s devices.
All this comes at a time when Americans can’t seem to get enough to smart home technology. The number of connected devices in U.S. internet households has doubled since 2016. More devices, especially if they are not properly integrated and protected, can open home owners to more attacks. The Rural Broadband Association reported that nearly 25% of users with 20 or more devices in their homes have experienced two or more data security breaches in the past year.
So what’s the solution?
Our work as integrators makes sure a home’s technology in properly installed, integrated, monitored and updated to protect our clients’ private information and prevent hacks.
We’re closely watching developments in the proposed Cyber Trust Mark, which would certify devices meet cybersecurity standards as outlined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This voluntary program has been called the “cybersecurity equivalent of the ENERGY STAR label” and could be in place next year.
Our clients’ privacy and security have been our priority from Day 1, and as smart home technology grows, it’s becoming more vital every day. Our expertise is about making sure the design, installation, and maintenance of a home’s technology is properly connected and secure. And we stay on the forefront of potential threats and best practices to protect a home’s technological ecosystem. Not only for today, but in years to come.
