The Sphere ... at Home?
One of the best parts of our work as integrators is that we are constantly surprised and excited by the new developments in technology.
The Sphere in Las Vegas is one of the coolest A/V developments to happen in years.
We’re going to geek out for just a bit about how freakin’ cool this thing really is, because we almost can’t believe it. And then we’re going to talk about what it means for our clients.
In case you haven’t heard about it, Sphere is a giant sphere entertainment arena in Las Vegas that opened in September. The latest development of Populous, it’s the largest spherical building in the world, at 75,000 square feet. It’s 366 feet high, 516 feet in diameter, and seats 18,600 people. 10,000 of those seats incorporate Haptic technology – which uses touch in computer simulations. What really blows our minds is the groundbreaking A/V. First, the visual: Inside you’ll find a 16K resolution wraparound interior LED screen. Outside are 580,000 square feet of LED displays (right now for Halloween, you can see it as a giant jack-o-lantern in the Nevada desert). And then there’s the sound: We’re talking completely immersive capabilities, a spatial audio system with beamforming and wave field synthesis technologies that uses 1,600 X1 speakers installed behind the LED panels, plus 300 mobile speakers. Sound can even come through the floor.
The sound is so specified that two sections of people, sitting side-by-side, can be listening to the same program in two different languages. That kind of pinpointed, accurate and immerse sound just blows our minds.
Then, for the cherry on top, the designers threw in wind and scent capabilities.
So yes, the Sphere is amazing, incredible – and it’s in Vegas.
Our clients value their home theaters now more than ever. Even post-pandemic, as we can travel and go to theaters and events, we’ve come to prefer our home theater spaces as the ultimate place for entertainment. We can have the seats we want, the lighting we want, the timing we prefer. We can entertain guests or just keep it to close family. We like that privacy and comfort, and the ability to choose what we want, when we want. But most of all, we want the A/V technology quality that meets our standards.
Here’s why we’re really excited for our clients.
Before the Sphere could be built on such a grand scale, it had to be built on a small scale. And if it can be built on a small scale, that means we can bring it into the home setting. That’s right – a completely immersive screen and sound experience, right in your home theater. The technology exists to do it. The designers and contractors are skilled to make it happen. We are super excited to bring this into reality in private home theaters.
