Let in the Light ... or Not
This time of year, we all start to notice the light. There’s so much more of it.
More light definitely affects our sleep. In these early spring weeks, some of us sleep less, some of us sleep a whole lot more. Most of us are a little wonky as far as sleep goes, anyway.
Light control – both natural and artificial – is one of our clients’ most requested services. With total home automation platforms like Savant, and global light innovator Lutron, we offer a variety of light control options. And they can do a lot more than just wake you up in the morning.
Automated shades can raise and lower on schedule. Pre-set lighting scenes set the mood for dinner, movie night, homework night. Full-spectrum lighting can be pre-set to mimic our natural Circadian rhythms, helping to regulate our sleep and wake patterns all day long, even inside our homes.
We like a recent New York Times article recommending five smart things to help us all wake up easier.
They highlight Lutron’s smart window shades that can be programmed to open every morning at a specified time. They also have the really cool option of opening based on our local sunrise, even as it gets earlier every day. They can also be automated to close at a certain time every day, or with the sunset. Our clients appreciate the convenience of shades that automatically rise and lower every day, rather than going around the house opening and closing them manually twice a day. And they can be set or changed from anywhere – using voice commands in the home, or a smartphone while traveling.
Lutron’s Serena Shades are super-quiet and look gorgeous, too – with a variety of options to suit our clients’ specific décor. And because they’re premier smart technology, they can be integrated with other smart tech in an automated home. They can alert smart thermostats to raise or lower the temperature. They can also go up when our clients arrive home.
One of our favorite features of smart lighting is that it does a lot more than just illuminate our homes. Automated shading and Pre-set lighting scenes can mimic actual activity in the home, making them an effective security method while our clients are away. Automated shades can use sunlight to lower heating costs, making them an excellent climate control tool that lowers energy costs.
