Does your broadband support your devices?
At Jackson Hole A/V, our integrators know the importance of proper foundation to support all the wireless needs a home will have – needs that keep changing and growing over time. From the wires in the walls to the number of routers, it’s crucial a home is ready to support additional smart home devices that are added.
This is especially important now, as new research shows that a third of broadband households in the U.S. own at least one smart home device, and 23% own three or more smart home devices. This is up 19% from just 2019.
A recent survey by Parks Associates of 10,000 US broadband households shows that 34% of US broadband households own at least one smart home device and 23% now own three or more smart home devices, up from 19% in 2019.
The survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband households, conducted by Parks Associates, an internationally recognized market research and consulting company specializing in emerging consumer technology products and services, shows that the demand for smart home technology is definitely growing.
"Smart home adoption has steadily increased, and the dynamics of this market have shifted, from one or two 'hero devices' driving overall adoption to a group of products combining to deliver targeted use cases," said Elizabeth Parks, president of Parks Associates, in an official statement.
Parks Associates’ research demonstrates more recent shifts in the broadband and consumer device markets:
- 24% of US broadband households with fixed broadband service are likely to upgrade in the next six months.
- 43% of US broadband households with children at home are very worried about them falling behind in school.
- 11% of US broadband households own a smart light bulb, and 9% own a smart plug.
- 25% of US broadband households plan to buy a connected health device in the next 12 months, and 34% are very interested in sharing data from these devices with a telehealth service.
- 34% of smart home device owners report having technical problems within the last 12 months.
Parks Associates also recently released a new quantified consumer study which showed that more than 50% of US broadband households reported their broadband usage has increased since the start of the COVID-19 crisis. While consumers report broadband performance is keeping pace with the increased demand, 24% of fixed broadband households reported plans to upgrade their speed in the next six months, compared to 18% just a few months prior.
"Broadband upgrade plans indicate many households see some COVID-19-related changes as permanent," said Steve Nason, Research Director, Parks Associates. "For video services, OTT service stacking has been particularly pronounced, with 45% of US broadband households subscribing to three or more OTT services. Many consumers are planning to add new services such as Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Peacock as a permanent part of their OTT service portfolio, beyond the traditional Big 3: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu."
