We listened to a fantastic smart home podcast with Residential Tech Today Editor-in-Chief Charles SWarner and Alex Capecelatro, Co-founder and CEO of one of our favorite automated home platforms, josh.ai.

Josh.ai is leading the way in voice control and Artificial Intelligence in integrated smart home technology, and we were super-excited to hear Alex’s thoughts on how smart home integration is playing an even larger role in our lives now that our homes have become the ultimate place for living and working. 

In a relatively short time, josh.ai has become a world leader in smart home technology. Just five years ago, Alex was building a home, his business partner was remodeling a home, and the two of them began talking about all the great hardware available for a smart home (like audio/video and lighting fixtures), but that the software felt like it wasn’t all that it could be. They began discussing how Artificial Intelligence could transform the home and user experience, and josh.ai was born.

There are key components to josh.ai’s success in home integration. First is the natural use of voice, in the way we would normally speak. Along with voice, josh.ai focuses on the use of data and machine learning (AI) to get smart about energy management, health and wellness, safety and security. Finally, data privacy and confidentiality are vital. The company is founded on the concept that you should feel safe and secure in your home, and that includes protecting your privacy and data.  

“We are never going to sell data, we’re never targeting ads,” Alex said in the podcast, noting that everything that can stay in the home does. “We’ve become the privacy focused voice control platform. It’s always been important to us, but we didn’t realize how important it would be until other mic systems started jeopardizing people’s data.”

Alex continued, “When we started this company, more important than building cool stuff, we wanted to build transformative products that actually make people’s lives better. We couldn’t honestly do that if we were selling your data and selling you ads."

And now that our homes have become the central location for where we do everything, the technology we use is even more crucial to daily living. Josh.ai is paying close attention to how things are evolving during the stay-at-home era. There’s the importance of making sure the network is as robust as possible, so that the network remains stable while clients are working from home, kids are going to school at home, and even more of our daily activity relies on a strong network.

Voice control plays an important role as well. It means there are less devices we’re touching, less germs we’re spreading. As we do everything at home, people are realizing how critical it is for our technology to be installed and integrated properly.  While the DIY element of buying and hooking up devices can be fun, when we rely on these devices for our livelihood, the proper installation and integration of these devices becomes critical.
